Penang council wants Line Clear to stay, but with licensed operator


A video taken by a close-circuit camera showing enforcement officers clearing the alley where the Line Clear stall in George Town is located at, on January 19, 2015. – The Malaysian Insider pic, January 21, 2015.The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) has assured that it has no plans to close down the iconic Line Clear food stall which occupies an alley in George Town after a raid on the place on Monday.MPPP president Datuk Patahiyah Ismail today said the local authorities are mindful of the heritage and tourism value of the eatery which has been operating since the 1930s.She said the council’s action of clearing the alley of the restaurant’s tables and chairs was because the party currently operating the site does not have a licence to do so.She said the MPPP received a complaint from the rightful licence holder who is allowed to operate at the alley beginning January 1, 2015, under an annual rotation plan agreed upon with the parties, who are all cousins, last year.“We have written to the current operator’s lawyer, advising his client to abide by the law, but they have still continued to operate." she said at a press conference at the MPPP office in Komtar.She said the MPPP will take legal action to ensure that the restaurant is run by an authorised licensed operator who abides by the law.She noted that the operator has blocked off the alley with fixed structures, and added the MPPP will look into this matter. Abdul Latiff Thulkarunai, under an agreement made last year, was given the licence to operate followed by Sahubarali China Mohd Hanibah in 2016 and Pathumah Iskandar in 2017, she said.The current operator, Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir, is authorised to take over in 2018, she added."Following the rotation system agreed by the council, a letter was also issued separately to Abdul Hamid bin Seeni Parkir on December 16, 2014, to vacate the said premise starting January 1, 2015," she said.But, he has remained at the site, resulting in Latiff not being able to move in, she added."We have told him (Abdul Latiff) to lodge a police report," she added.Patahiyah said the MPPP conducted its operation at 4am because there would be a minimal number of customers at the restaurant.But, Hamid resumed operations yesterday despite the raid on Monday.His son Hashim, who is managing the business, said yesterday they have instituted legal proceedings for the court to decide once and for all which party should operate the premise."We can all show our documents during the trial, and leave it to the courts," he said. "Otherwise it is a never-ending story, and the quarrel will continue generation after generation." – January 21, 2015.
