Jailing Anwar will only make Pakatan stronger, says PAS

Sending opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to prison will only strengthen the Pakatan Rakyat, says PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, January 28, 2015.Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's imprisonment will not affect Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) operations but instead the coalition will grow stronger because of it, says PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali today.Mustafa, who was speaking at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, said even if the Federal Court's verdict this February 10 was not in favour of the opposition leader, PR would remain intact."PR will be stronger... because each party is responsible to make it work."It does not matter if he (Anwar) is not there. During the Barisan Alternatif, before PR was formed, Anwar was in jail and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail took over the helm of PKR."If Anwar is not around, we have Kak Wan (Wan Azizah), (Mohamed) Azmin (Ali). Those are their leaders."PAS works with the parties not the individuals, he added. On PAS leaving the Pakatan Rakyat coalition, Mustafa said the rift between PAS and DAP has yet to reach a critical point.“The thought never crossed our minds. Don't be too quick to make assumptions,"“Nobody knows of anyone's intention," he said, responding to MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon's statement that PAS might do so if Anwar is jailed for sodomy on February 10."I have never contacted anyone in MCA. Don't know what he is trying to say. He too never asked me anything about it," he added.Chong in commenting on an Umno-PAS collaboration said Anwar was the glue that held the pact together despite disagreements affecting the three parties within the coalition. He said if Anwar was jailed for five years, Pakatan would reshape itself, which may lead to PAS breaking away from the opposition pact.Chong said in light of such scenario, he did not discount the possibility of PAS and Umno forming a partnership together. But, he said influential PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat remained a hindrance to the proposal. – January 28, 2015.
